What Polling Rate Actually Looks Like
Polling rate is how many times per second your mouse reports its position to your PC. A higher rate means smaller, more frequent updates — which is what actually reduces perceived input delay.
Polling Rate (Hz) = 1000 ÷ Average Time Between Reports (ms)
True DPI = Pixels Moved ÷ (Physical Inches Moved × Display Scaling)

Running the Test in Four Steps
Measure a fixed distance
Use a ruler or a marked mousepad, and move your mouse exactly 10 cm across the test area above.

1000 Hz is the de facto standard for competitive gaming, offering a 1ms report interval that’s imperceptible for the vast majority of players. Rates above 2000 Hz require a capable CPU, mouse, and system to fully benefit from.
Native DPI Steps & Interpolation
Most gaming mice use native sensor DPI steps. A DPI set outside these steps can be interpolated by firmware, which can introduce small accuracy drift.

Why Testing DPI and Polling Rate Matters
Cheap or aging mice can drift from their rated DPI
Sensor degradation, outdated firmware, or budget optical sensors can cause a mouse to report a DPI different from what’s set in software. Testing periodically catches this before it affects aim consistency.
Wireless mice and dongles can affect polling rate
Signal interference, outdated dongle firmware, or USB port limitations can cause a wireless mouse to poll lower than its rated maximum. Testing confirms your real-world Hz rather than trusting the spec sheet.
USB hubs and extension cables can bottleneck polling
A low-quality USB hub or long, low-grade extension cable can silently cap polling rate below its rated value. If your result is lower than expected, try connecting directly to a rear I/O USB port.
Consistency matters more than chasing maximum numbers
