What Causes Stick Drift

Analog sticks report position using a potentiometer or Hall-effect sensor that measures the stick’s tilt. Drift happens when that measurement stops returning to true zero at rest.

Physical Wear

Repeated use gradually wears down the internal contacts of a potentiometer-based stick, causing it to report a slightly off-center resting value. This is the single most common cause and tends to appear after months of heavy use.
